How to Install Lubuntu 18.04 Dual Boot with Windows 10

Lubuntu is based on the LXDE environment which aims to be lightweight. It's a great distribution as it aims to keep the impact on your system low and takes up fewer resources.

We have another article which explains in detail the same procedure with Ubuntu 18.04, this article will give some process without deeper explanation. All the steps have been realized in a virtual environment but the steps are the same for a real environment.

This article is focused on the steps to install Lubuntu 18.04 in dual boot with windows 10.

1) Prepare the partition on windows

New windows systems are installed in EFI mode and use GPT partitions. So you have to check if it's the same with your Windows systems. Normally if our Windows OS is installed on EFI mode, we will install Lubuntu also in EFI but it's installed on Bios mode, we will do the same for Ubuntu.

You can see that it has been installed in EFI mode. Now you have to create the partition to install Lubuntu. If you have a single partition, then you need to create the partition which will contain the new system. You will need to open the disk management with the combination windows + r and enter the command diskmgmt.msc

In our case, the disk is 60GB and we will install Lubuntu in 40GB. Here we will create the global partition and the sub-partitions during the dual boot installation process

Create the partition and enter the size for the Linux partition. You can replace the default size and enter the one that you need to use. It will show you the size after shrink for Windows.

When the operation is finished, we will leave the partition as unallocated so that we will recognize it easily during the process installation as a free partition.

Now you can reboot to begin the installation process but make sure before to disable fast startup. Then reboot on the Lubuntu support media windows setting -> update & security -> recovery -> Advanced startup -> restart now

2) Installation of Lubuntu 18.04 in dual boot

Now that you can see the grub, choose the installation. When you see the black background color on the grub, it shows that the installation is on EFI mode

now choose the language to be installed on the system

Choose your keyboard language

Now choose to download the package during the installation

We will manually create the partition so we will choose a manual installation

For our new system, we will create only two partitions the root and home. We don't need to have an EFI boot partition because windows has already created that partition.

Now create the root partition and choose the filesystem to use

Then create the home partition with the filesystem

now the two partitions have been created

You will be asked to validate the partitioning that you have made. At this step, all the operation will take effect if you continue. If you see that you have done an error, you can go back and cancel or use the revert option to cancel all the partitions that you have created.

Now you need to configure your localization. It's important to indicate the good localization so that, your system will be able to communicate with the nearest repositories during the installation of the systems package and the future updates.

Now create your account with a good password.

Now that your account has been created, you can launch the installation

The installation will take some time depending on the speed of your network. After you will see the end of the process.

The system will reboot and you will see the grub

Now you can log in the system

You can now explore your new system

You can see that the dual boot installation process of Lubuntu 18.04 is very easy and simple and it follows the same steps as the installation of Ubuntu 18.04 in dual boot. Because our Windows is in EFI mode, we can install Lubuntu with secured boot option enabled without a problem. If you are in Bios mode, you can disable it to install Lubuntu but the secured boot is normally supported.
